"Natick panel hits pause on iPod ban"

I have very strong feelings on the article, "Natick panel hits pause on iPod ban." In this Natick School system, students are being pressed with the removal of all electronic devices, including cell phones and iPods. I completely understand teachers and principles not wanting the devices used during classes, especially when they are having lessons and lectures, not only is that disruptive, it is extremely rude. However, every student receives a period of their own time during the school day, a study period. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but a study is ultimately for the STUDENT. Whether that student needs to complete their ten page term paper, or catch up on some lost sleep the night before, it is there time to do with it what they will. With that said, shouldn't the student be able to utilize gadgets and techniques that help them? For example, there can be a straight A student, completely responsible and mature, who can only get her work done with the use of her iPod. This student has a hard time getting work done when there are people around, using her iPod as a method to isolate herself and block everyone else out in order to finish her work. Then there is the student who has just had the worst day, got no sleep the night before, and just wants to relax with his/her study period. For this student, her horrible day can be cheered up with her inspirational music she loves flowing in her ears and empowering her veins. Both ways, the iPod use is beneficial rather than "distracting." So, to ban electronics altogether in a school, I think is not the best approach at better students' education.
