The new movie, "waiting for superman," appears extremely interesting, sad, and truthful all at the same time. The fact that education in America is taking a turn for the worst, is very accurate. Although I do believe teachers and school systems have a large role, it more or less comes down to the students. I have had teachers who were complete airheads and were not even confident in the subject they were teaching. Those, in my opinion are teachers who affect school systems, and community education. In addition to the teachers who are too hesitant to stand their ground and teach the subject they have been studying for years, there are teachers who know what they are teaching and have the potential to be an excellent teacher but have no enthusiasm or care to whether or not student retain information. Believe it or not some teachers could care less whether or not their students "get it," what they care about is getting through the day with a paycheck. This is not to say there are no good teachers out there. I have had plenty of amazing teachers who inspire me to pursue my education and future just based solely on their passion and dedication to teaching and helping students.
With that, the responsibility lies with the students. All the best teachers in the world cannot help a student who does not want to learn. Although there are some teachers out there who create the image of teachers not caring or knowing how to teach, there are numerous school systems with numerous successful teachers. Teachers are not the glitch in the system, undedicated students are. Just take this into perspective, in a perfect world, all students are eager to go to school and learn. So they wake up every morning to be educated in school, but their teachers are complete duds. If all those students care about their future and education, they will strive to learn the material, seek extra help, and challenge the teacher to do their job. Ultimately what I am saying is teachers are not the ones to blame, at this time, not until all students express their dedication and willingness to learn with the best of their ability. It is then when the problem turns to the teachers.
